A beautifully sculpted Italian marble bust of the famous Greek god Apollo of Belvedere, on a socle stand, circa 1870 in date.
This beautifully carved Carrara marble bust was created in Italy during the 19th Century. The bust is after the "Apollo Belvedere", a full-size Roman original carved during the early 2nd Century AD that portrays the Greek god Apollo. It is considered to be a Roman copy of an original bronze statue created between 330 and 320 B.C. by the Greek sculptor Leochares. The original sculpture was rediscovered in 1489 and put on display in the Vatican Palace in 1511.The attention to detail throughout the piece is second to none and the figure is extremely lifelike.
