The house was designed with the assistance of Sir Christopher Wren and built in 1697 by Sir Edward Blackett MP who went on to make a fortune in the South Sea Company . The house was sold in 1748 to Richard Elcock Weddell whose son William improved and enlarged the house. The interiors were remodelled and several architects were commissioned including Robert Adam.
