Bronze Sculpture, Bronze Statues & Bronze Busts

The use of bronze for casting sculpture is an old one and one which has changed little over the years. There are still plenty of bronze foundries across the UK, but most often found in and around London.

Bronze is an alloy of Copper (around 80%) and Tin although other elements are often added to give the alloy different qualities.

Bronze is particularly useful for making larger statues as it is not brittle, although its relatively high cost, due mainly to the Copper content, has to be taken into consideration. It is not unheard of for large bronze statues to be stolen and melted down due to the high value of the alloy.

The bronze bust is of course a firm favourite and all of the “usual suspects” are represented from time to time. The Emperor Napoleon, the Duke of Wellington, William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar and a host of other Roman luminaries are all amongst those regularly featured in bronze busts.

Bronze Fountains & Outdoor Bronze Statues

Many of our bronze statues are suitable for use outdoors. Bronze is an alloy that doesn’t rust, as it contains no iron, but it can corrode over time - however this tends to give it an even more attractive patinated appearance which is often sought after by enthusiasts. Bronze then is ideal for use outdoors and is the medium of choice for outdoor and public sculpture in towns and cities all over the world.

With that in mind, we are always pleased to be able to offer statues that would fit in nicely with your garden at home or of course with larger gardens, parks, hotels and larger estates. Many of our pieces have been made - or adapted - for use as fountains and water features so please be sure to ask about those if that is what you are looking for.

A visit to our London showroom would enable you to see several examples of bronze statues that are of a size that could only really be displayed in a large building with high ceilings or outdoors. Everything from horses, horses and riders, large animals such as bears and elephants, Roman gladiators and warriors, and even a life-sized statue of physicist Albert Einstein sitting on a bench have all featured in our inventory from time to time.

Bronzes of animals are particularly popular for outdoor use with the horse or horse and rider being amongst the most popular subjects along with bears and deer. Let's not forget bronze statues of birds though, we always have examples of large bronze statues of birds for our showroom and website visitors to look at including ever popular subjects like eagles, owls and others.

Art Deco Bronze Statues and other Art Deco Bronzes

The Art Deco movement which came to prominence in the 1920s and 1930s was very fond of bronze as a medium for expressing the lovely lines and curves which were so much a part of its ethos.

As a result, there were a number of prominent artists and sculptors who specialised in producing bronze sculptures including Demétre Chiparus, Ferdinand Preiss, Paul Phillipe and many more. We have examples, usually recasts of the original pieces, by all of these well-known Art Deco sculptors in our showroom for you to see.

Bronze Animal Sculptures

Animal sculptures are always popular, for two main reasons: firstly they are popular with those who have a love of animals and birds and who collect a variety of decorative pieces which feature animals in many different styles and materials, secondly, there are those who focus on bronze animal sculpture and we are able to display a large collection ranging from small pieces suitable for the display cabinet, the table top, desk top or sideboard, right up to larger than life-sized bronze horses, bears and other impressive animals which are predominantly used for display outdoors.

Bronze Lamps and Lighting

Although most bronze sculpture is designed to be placed on display and looked at and admired, we do also stock bronze pieces that have been adapted, or were originally designed, to be lamps or light sources of one sort or another. Bronze table lamps, wall lights and other examples are well represented in our showroom but we also usually have larger items of bronze lighting available which may be suitable for use outdoors.

This is a remarkable pair of antique Italian gilt bronze ormolu  Grand Tour Urns modelled as the Warwick vase, circa 1860 in date.   These stunning urns have been superbly cast in the same form as the ancient Roman vase, the campana shaped form features rich ornamention with an applied beaded decorated border and a pair of intertwining vine handles to each with various immortal masks. They are raised on square black marble bases. This superb pair of French Neo Classical Grand Tour bronze urns are most elaborate and finely detailed, Circa 1870 in date. They have a flared neck with foliate casting and a beaded collar. The bulbous bodies have a graduated reeded design at the top from which a pair of foliate scrolled handles connect to the rim. They are superbly decorated with neoclassical relief decoration of figures performing music and literature. They are raised on a pedestal base with a square plinth. This high quality hot cast solid bronze was produced using the traditional "lost wax" process, otherwise known as the "cire perdue" method.   The craftsmanship is second to none throughout all aspects of this pair and they are sure to add an unparalleled touch of class to your home. Antique French Grand Tour Ormolu Bronze Model of Vendome Column 19thC

This is a wonderful antique French Grand Tour bronze model of the Vendome Column, circa 1880 in date.   This splendid bronze features Napoleon I standing atop in his 'redingote' coat and trademark hat, after the original by Charles-Emile Seurre. Construction on the original Vendome column was started in 1806 at Napoleon’s direction to celebrate the victory of Austerlitz, and completed in 1810.    The spiralling column is covered in delightful bas-relief bronze plates - which resemble the original bronze plates constructed out of cannons taken from the combined armies of Europe.    It is raised on an elegant black slate platform base and is ideal for use as a desk weight.   This stunning high-quality bronze is superbly cast and has an elegant golden patina. It is made from the lost-wax process, otherwise known as 'cire perdue' method.   The attention to detail and quality throughout this piece is second to none. Condition: In excellent condition.

This is a monumental bespoke two-tier bronze water fountain beautifully sculpted in the Italian baroque style. This superb bronze water fountain sprays its water out of the top through a standing cherub into the top tier. The water then falls through four Pegasus winged horses into the second tier and finally out through six lion’s head water cartouches. It is raised by a column of four classically dressed maidens each of which is holding a musical instrument as well as offerings of flowers and fruit. As can be seen from the photographs this bronze water fountain is also magnificently decorated with wine grapes and shells. A beautiful large Japanese Meiji Period patinated bronze study of an elephant with tigers,  signed on the belly, Meiji period, 1868-1912, and late 19th Century in date. The finely cast sculpture shows a striding elephant with it's head and trunk raised fighting two tigers. The tigers with stripes delineated in subtly-toned patination, the cartouche on the underside signed, and raised on a decorative rustic wooden stand. This is a beautiful antique Napoleon III gilded ormolu and Limoges enamel jewellery casket, Circa 1870 in date. The hinged lid having a beautiful finely painted miniature Limoges enamel portrait bust of a young lady, signed L.C., on an oval panel surrounded by striking red guilloche enamel. This very fine casket is painted in enamel, and hails from the great centre of Enamel Art of Limoges in France, it is signed L.C.  for Levy Coblentz, (1828-1900), he is known for his high quality work. The casket with filigree textured panels is decorated with acanthus leaf mounts and raised on lion paw feet,  the lid opens to reveal an interior lined with the original padded floral patterned silk, making it ideal for the storage and display of precious jewellery or small objects. It is a lovely piece which is functional as well as being highly decorative. Condition: In excellent condition, the enamel in perfect condition.

This is a striking large antique gilt bronze figural sculpture titled "The Water Carrier" (L'acquaiolo) by Vincenzo Gemito, (Italian 1852-1929), dating from Circa 1880. This is a beautiful antique bronze sculpture of a lioness by the renowned French sculptor Louis Riche (1877 - 1947), circa 1910 in date.   The sculpture depicts a recumbent lioness raised on a stepped rectangular base, signed L Riche and inscribed Med. d’or, E Algrain, Paris. A superb antique bronze and marble sculputure group titled "The Betrothal" by Carl Kauba (1865-1922), circa 1890 in date. The bronze features a classical youth placing a ring on the hand of a girl sitting on a stepped marble base,  signed C KAUBA FECIT. This is a fine antique pair of French Grand Tour patinated-bronze sculptures of the Marly Horses, Circa 1850 in date and signed to one base.   The original Marly Horses were commissioned by Louis XV of France, sculpted in Carrara marble, showing two rearing horses with their grooms, by Guillaume Coustou, and made in 1743 and completed in 1745. They now sit in the courtyard of the Richelieu wing of the Louvre Museum. This is a fantastic bronze garden water feature statue. It is a fountain featuring two large bronze herons standing on a log and dates from the late 20th century. This is a large bronze garden water feature statue standing at 206 cm (6 feet, 9 inches), showing two magnificently detailed herons standing on a log. Contrasting green and brown patina has been used to brilliant effect with lots of intricate detailing ensuring the lifelike nature of this wonderful bronze garden fountain statue. Sculpted in the Victorian style, this bronze garden water feature is a fountain with water flowing out from nozzles in the breaks of the herons and one from the top of the tree trunk. Cast from solid bronze, it was made by the traditional lost wax (cire perdue) method. This gorgeous bronze garden water feature can be used as a stand-alone fountain or as the centrepiece in a pond. The lost wax method or ‘cire perdue’ as it is known in French, is a traditional method that dates back at least five thousand years. The method enables casting of bronze (and other metal) sculptures, statues and objects with the finest detail. It works by creating a model of the object to be cast in wax or other suitable material. A mould is then made from this and coated on the inside with a layer of wax to the desired thickness of the metal required for the object being cast. Suitable vents and a pour hole are also inserted into the mould and wax layer so that gases can escape and so the molten metal can be poured into it. The remaining internal space of the mould is filled with a heat proof material and the whole assembly is baked in a kiln. The wax melts and runs off and the molten bronze is then poured into the space left behind and left to cool. Once the metal is cold the mould and inner material is removed leaving a perfect replica of the original model. The mould can be reused (depending on the quality of the material) to create further castings. This it the method that was used to produce this fantastic bronze garden water feature and it bears testament to the very fine and intricate detailing that can be achieved. This is an impressive bronze sculpture of Napoleon Bonaparte as  First Consul, Mid 19th century in date. The exquisite black patina bust features Napoleon in First Consul uniform, mounted on a beautiful socle base. Napoleon reigned as First Consul from November 10, 1799 to December  1804. The consulate was replaced by Premier Empire with the  coronation of Napoleon I on December 2, 1804.  This high-quality bronze is made from the lost wax process cire perdue.     Condition: In excellent condition, please see photos for confirmation.

This is a truly magnificent antique Victorian patinated bronze sculpture of the famous Greek God Apollo,    modelled upon a shaped circular socle, inscribed monogram 'NF' and numbered 21170 to the underside, circa 1860 in date.     This stunning bronze sculpture features Apollo in classical pose after the celebrated marble sculpture of the "Apollo Belvedere". The nude figure is standing tall with his right arm resting on a tree and his left arm outstretched.   Slung over Apollo’s shoulders is his quiver held in place by a strap. As exactly in the original Apollo Belvedere, the God here appears in magnificent form and physique, and he is shown just moments after releasing his arrow. Apollo stands “contrapposto”, with one leg remaining rigid while the other is relaxed;     This high-quality hot cast solid bronze was produced using the traditional "lost wax" process, otherwise known as the "cire perdue" method.     This is a splendid antique bronze sculpture and it will no doubt become the centrepiece of your collection. This is an elegant monumental Grand Tour bronze sculpture of  Michelangelo's David, circa 1880 in date. The full-length portrait statue is of David, the 14ft marble statue depicts the Biblical hero David, represented as a standing male nude, David looks tense and ready for battle after he has made the decision to fight Goliath, but, before the battle has actually taken place. His brow is drawn, his neck tense, and the veins bulge out of his lowered right hand and holding his slingshot over his shoulder. This impressive scuplture is 107cm (3ft 6" ) tall and weighs over 36kgs (79lbs).
