Walking sticks and canes have a fascinating history, evolving from practical tools to symbols of status and artistry. At Regent Antiques, we take pride in showcasing a collection that celebrates this evolution, offering pieces as diverse as they are captivating.
Take this helixophile’s delight, a 19th century novelty with a hidden corkscrew. This stunning antique walking stick features an L-shaped stag antler handle with a hidden brass cork screw on a malacca tapering shaft to ensure that any bottle can be opened on any sojourn at a moment’s notice.
Or this stunning antique Russian silver gilt, nephrite jade, and blue enamel walking stick bearing Russian silver hallmarks, circa 1880.
Among our collection, one standout piece exemplifies the artistry of antique canes: a Russian walking stick from circa 1880. Its cylindrical agate pommel is elegantly accented with a silver gilt lizard featuring mesmerizing ruby eyes. Such craftsmanship speaks to the dual role of canes as functional items and works of art.
The historical origins of the word cane seem to connect to the fact that most earlier shafts were constructed of rattans or bamboo. Perhaps prehistoric man’s first walking stick was a tree branch, which could both stabilise him and be used as a tool for self-defence.
Canes were used by those of all social classes in ancient Egypt, often carved and elaborately decorated in a manner that hinted at one’s standing in society – be it a shepherd, soldier, priest, or pharaoh. King Tutankhamen was buried with 132 walking sticks to ensure that he had plenty of choice in the next life!
Around the 16th century, the walking stick became an accessory of the aristocracy, often highly decorative and ornate, although they were not allowed in the presence of a king or queen.
Today, antique walking sticks and canes are more than relics of the past—they are cherished collectibles and conversation pieces. Whether for their historical significance or intricate design, they remain timeless symbols of refinement.
