Antique Longcase Clock – Hello Old-Timer
From my childhood days there has always been one thing which, for me, represents the world of Antiques better than anything else and that is the “Grandfather” or Longcase clock. I had an uncle who had one in his house and I loved to hear it strike and watch the various dials rotate as it did so. Another interesting occupation was simply sitting in front of the grandfather clock and watching the pendulum as it swung from side to side with that characteristic clicking sound.
I am very happy, therefore, to be writing this short piece to introduce you to a very fine antique Grandfather clock, AKA an antique long case clock, dating from the Victorian era, in or around 1880. It is an antique late Victorian, marquetry, mahogany, 8 day, musical chiming longcase clock which has been painstakingly restored in our own workshops and is sold in excellent condition and full working order.
The clock has an eight-day five pillar movement on an arch dial and it chimes on 8 bells and a gong on each quarter hour. It also boasts a strike or silent option and also has a Westminster/Whittington facility.
There is an arched dial featuring a silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals and small Arabic numerals above the numerals as well as foliate divisions between them. The centre of the clock’s dial is has been gilded and there is also a subsidiary seconds dial. The rest is gilded and the four corners are adorned with mask baroque spandrels. The arch also incorporates the strike/silent option.
Turning to the hood which has a beautiful cornice, inlaid with more beautiful decorative marquetry. The door of the hood is flanked by ormolu Corinthian columns which have brass capitals.
On either side of the hood there are shaped panels, having mahogany fretwork to allow the sound to attenuate. Moving onto the case itself, this is smothered with beautiful inlaid marquetry and cross-banded decoration which is undoubtedly the work of a Victorian master craftsman. Opening the door will reveal the three weights and the brass pendulum.
There are two chiming options on this fine grandfather clock, the five pillar eight day movement chimes the hours and quarters on eight bells, strikes the hour on a gong, and you can choose between Westminster and Whittington chimes.
The clock is supplied with working locks and key and has the original winding key. This Victorian antique longcase clock is offered for sale at just £5850 and available for shipping worldwide – please request a shipping quotation to your destination. UK mainland shipping is free of charge.
