Antique Longcase Clock – Just Arrived Into Stock
Our buyers have an eye for a fine clock and have just acquired this excellent Antique Longcase Clock, also known as a “Grandfather” clock, dating from around 1780 by Thomas Barry of Ormskirk.
Lovers of antique clocks will want to take the time to look at this fine antique clock which, standing some 8ft 3 inches in height, is sure to make its mark in whichever room it is placed. The clock chimes on the hour and quarter hour, having two weights, a pendulum, winding key and having the moonphase feature.
The casing is fashioned from top quality flame mahogany inlaid with attractive cross banding and the dial is engraved “Thomas Barry of Ormsk irk” with Tempus Fugit, (time flies), engraved just below the moon phase section.
This longcase, or “grandfather” clock has been fully restored in our own workshops and you are invited to examine all of the images available using this link, where you will also find a short video as well.
The clock is fitted with a 12 inch arched brass dial complete with wide silvered chapter ring with Roman and Arabic numerals. The arch shows the various phases of the moon. The eight day two train movement strikes on a bell and it is all contained in a flame mahogany case which is inlaid with figured panels, crossbanding, garlands and shell motifs, the upper part having a moulded scroll pediment as well as turned twin columns to the hood, with conforming columns to the trunk.
The clock is attributed to Thomas Barry, and bears his mark. Barry was born in 1756 and it is believed possible that he was the son of Joseph Berry or Barry, a breeches maker, and Margaret Culshaw. He is known to have produced and signed a number of good quality clocks. The clock stands on a plinth base complete with ogee bracket feet.
The National Museum of Liverpool owns an astronomical clock by Thomas Barry and one James Moorcroft which is considered to be the finest to survive.
