Art Deco Statues after Chiparus – from Regent Antiques
At Regent Antiques we are well known for our expertise in bringing Art Deco furniture to the attention of our customers, old and new, however, in this article we are concentrating on Art Deco objects that are purely decorative in nature, and not functional as is the case with Art Deco furniture.
Our first piece is this lovely Art Deco Style Bronze Cabaret Dancer After Chiparus which is on offer at our London showroom or online for just £375.00.
Here we have a superb bronze sculpture of an exotic cabaret dancer in 1920s costume, in a typical Art Deco style.
It is a recast of an original sculpture and bears a foundry mark as well as the replica signature of DH Chiparus. It was cast using the traditional “lost wax” method and the level of detail is superb. This sculpture is set on an lovely marble base and is very lifelike. The statue is 50cm high.
Coming up next is another piece after Chiparus, a fine Art Deco Style Bronze Dancer, 52cm high and offered at just £475.00.
Demetre H. Chiparus was born in Romania in 1886 and attended school in Italy. Just before the start of World War I he moved to Paris and attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts under the guidance of two talented sculptors Anonin Mercier and Jean Boucher.
He began to experiment with small bronze sculptures and produced small bronze works. In 1914, was awarded an honorable mention at the Salon of the Societe des Artistes Francais. Many of Paris’ art collectors began to appreciate his work after World War One had finished and the demand for his sculptures quickly increased.
Chiparus was fascinated by dancers, in was heavily influenced by Diaghiley’s Ballets Russes and Leon Bakst’s stage designs.
A few examples of his well known pieces are Starfish Dancer, Dancer with Raised Skirt, Danseuse with Fan and Kapurthalian Danseuse.
Our final piece continues the theme of Chiparus and his beloved dancers and is this Art Deco Style Bronze Hoop Dancer After Chiparus
Another piece recast from an original bearing the signature of D H Chiparus, this time it is of a lovely hoop dancer in exotic Eastern attire.
This high quality bronze is set on an attractive marble base and is made from the lost wax process cire perdue.
The statue is 51cm in height.
