Bergere
A bergère is a type of French upholstered armchair with upholstered armrests and back. It is fitted with a loose, but tailored seat cushion. The frame for the seat is upholstered over, but the rest of the wooden frame is exposed, although some may have padded elbow rests. The wooden frame may be carved or moulded and can be painted, gilded or highly polished or waxed. Woods used include mahogany, walnut or a fruitwood.
It is designed for comfort and has a wider, deeper seat than a regular fauteuil. In the 18th Century they were specifically designed to be moved about as convenient seating, rather than as formal set pieces arranged as part of the decor.
