A Loo table was originally a card table designed for the card game ‘loo’ or ‘lanterloo’. It had an oval or round top and a hinge mechanism attached to the pedestal that enabled the table to be folded away when not in use.
Tables that have a folding mechanism are sometimes called ‘loo tables’ even if they have a square or rectangular top
The game of loo was very popular in the 18th century but its popularity faded in the 20th century.
