Lowboy

A Lowboy is an American term for a low table used as a vanity or dressing table that has one or two rows of drawers. It is called a lowboy to contrast with a tallboy or high chest of drawers. It was usually made from oak, mahogany or walnut, with the fronts of the drawers mounted with brass escutcheons and pulls.

Lowboys and tallboys were popular furniture pieces in 18th Century Britain and America, with the lowboy most often used as a dressing-table or a side-table.

Pieces from the Queen Anne, early Georgian and Chippendale styles often have slipper or claw-and-ball feet, cabriole legs and carved knees. Some examples have fronts that are sculpted with the scallop shell figure under the centre drawer.
