Tantalus
Is the name given to a type of decanter which have their bottle stoppers tightly locked down by a metal bar. They were originally introduced to prevent servants stealing the contents, as they needed a key to be unlocked. A Tantalus usually holds three decanters, although versions are available that only hold two. They can be highly ornate and have metal handles on both sides of the encasement.
The name alludes to the Greek myth of Tantalus who was punished for angering the Gods. He was made to stand in water that receded when he bent down to drink, and fruit hanging over his head would move out of his reach when he tried to grasp it. The word ‘tantalising’ derives from his name and means to be tempted by something just out of reach.
