That’s Unusual – An Antique Metamorphic Library Chair
At Regent Antiques we like to think that we have an eye for the beautiful, the highest quality of workmanship and, from time to time, the unusual and quirky. This blog post is about an unusual antique Victorian solid mahogany metamorphic chair, also widely known as a library chair, which we have just acquired and which dates from around 1880.
Now, we do appreciate of course that most people will not have a library in their home these days but don’t let that put you off – this antique chair is far from being a one-trick pony. In fact it is not only good to look, beautifully made and an interesting conversation piece in its own right but it also serves as a very useful set of steps that could be employed in the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and, of course, the library – if you have one.
These chairs were intended to be both a solution to a problem and a useful piece of furniture as well and are typically very characteristic of Victorian ingenuity. This one is made from solid mahogany, a popular timber known for both its strength and its beauty, and will occupy the following amount of space in your library, or wherever you choose to place it:
Height 88cm x Width 39cm x Depth 68cm – when converted into steps
Height 88cm x Width 39cm x Depth 48cm – when closed.
For those of you who prefer feet and inches, as the Victorians would certainly have done, it would go something like this:
Height 2 feet, 11 inches x Width 1 foot, 3 inches x Depth 2 feet, 3 inches – open
Height 2 feet, 11 inches x Width 1 foot, 3 inches x Depth 1 foot, 7 inches – closed
The library chair is in excellent condition and is offered for sale at just £625. It can be on its way to you following just a few simple mouse clicks.
