A key matter is the condition of a silver item and how much restoration work has taken place. When picking out silver antiques that are over 200 years old they will probably have what is called a 'patina' which is a combination of the colour and the wear. You cannot expect an old silver article to look like it just came from the workshop - if it does then it has almost certainly been significantly restored which is not the best thing for an item of antique silver. Remember that in the silver antiques world a little bit of restoration is okay where a small ding or dent may be meticulously taken out. But be weary of ‘over plating’, lead or silver solder, repaired seams, holes, erased inscriptions, patches and later enhancements or ornaments. All of these are not acceptable for a piece of great antique silver. Happily here at Regent Antiques we are vigilant and provide only the finest unblemished silver pieces and if something like re-plating has taken place we will tell you. We always provide you with ample photographs of our silver items so you can see particularly what condition they are in. Do take a few minutes to look at the photographs for this pair of English silver champagne coolers to satisfy yourself of their condition. If you have any uncertainties about them you are always very welcome to call or email us. We will be delighted to put your mind at rest about the condition of this pair of silver plate wine coolers. Please note that silver tarnishes and you will have to take care of it by polishing it relatively frequently. It's a good notion to clean it with a long term polish and then then try to show it in a relatively airtight cupboard if appropriate. This will keep it glistening for the greatest possible time. If you look after them well this pair of English silver champagne coolers will basically last forever.
